Presentation by Joseph Ghio at Financial Services seminar
Date: 11th December, 2009
Joseph Ghio addressed a half-day seminar on 'Recent Developments in company, consumer and financial services legislation' organised by The Chamber of Advocates and the Department of Commercial Law, University of Malta. Dr Ghio delivered a 30 minute presentation entitled "Lessons from the crisis? Developments in the Financial Services Regulatory Landscape".
Regulatory systems globally have been criticised for having failed to foresee the financial crisis, let alone prevent it. Suddenly politicians were forced to reprioritise their agenda to respond to unprecedented market frenzy and restore confidence in financial products and institutions. Speedy proposals for overhauling regulatory and supervisory systems worldwide were questioned for coming at the expense of proper consultation. One year after the crisis, Dr Ghio briefly looked at how the regulatory landscape for financial services has changed and will likely continue to develop. While credit rating agencies and alternative investment funds will most likely experience the biggest changes in their regulatory environment, the European regulatory architecture will be undergoing material transformation with the setting up of a new supervisory framework.
The seminar was held at the Intercontinental Hotel, St. Julian's on the 11 December 2009 and organised with the support of the Malta Financial Services Authority and Banif Bank (Malta) plc.
